Overview

As a metropolitan planning organization (MPO), OKI is required to prepare a transportation improvement program (TIP), listing all federally funded and other regionally significant transportation projects in the MPO planning area.

OKI’s TIP lists committed transportation improvements in the eight-county OKI region. A new TIP is produced every two years, with each one spanning four years. The TIP is fiscally constrained, meaning total costs must not exceed expected funds available.

Inclusion in the TIP is a requirement for receiving federal transportation funds. The TIP provides a list by county of all federally funded or regionally significant highway and transit projects sponsored by municipal, county, or state governments or transit agencies. The TIP provides an overview of the transportation planning process and how projects are selected through the state DOTs or OKI.

The TIP includes a list of multi-modal transportation projects, such as:

  • Improving highways that have recommendations for improving bus service
  • Advanced technologies to move traffic more efficiently
  • Projects that reduce drive-alone commuting, including ridesharing
  • Bicycle and pedestrian projects
  • Upgrading highway operating efficiency and projects that improve freight operations
